Adoption Policy: Single Kitten

Pattes Communautaires is a shelter dedicated to the well-being of cats. Like most shelters in Quebec, we do not adopt out kittens under 6 months old alone into a home without another cat.

Single Kitten Syndrome

Kittens learn communication, boundaries, and emotional regulation through other felines. Without this interaction, they can develop behavioral issues, anxiety, and health problems.

Our Adoption Rules

  • 🐱 Kitten < 6 months: mandatory duo adoption — two kittens together, or a home with a compatible cat.

  • 🐱 Kitten > 6 months / young adult: can be adopted alone, on a case-by-case basis.

  • 🏠 Telework / hybrid worker: an exception may be considered for a kitten < 6 months if the adopter is a hybrid worker, and if the kitten is assessed as independent. On a case-by-case basis.

  • 👴 Seniors: no young kittens without an official signed plan B — a kitten may outlive its adopter. With a certified and documented plan B, adoption may be considered.

A Widespread Practice in Quebec

These policies are shared by the vast majority of shelters in Quebec to ensure that every cat thrives. We are always happy to discuss your situation.

All adopted cats must live indoors and must under no circumstances be left outside.
